Mark your calendars for a Community Family Day on Saturday, August 18, at Candler Elementary School. On this day everyone is invited to come to the Candler Elementary for a time of “sprucing up the campus”. This would include mowing, weed eating, weed pulling, painting and putting out mulch. Teachers will be present for those who would prefer to work inside by helping to prepare classrooms for the upcoming school year. This portion of the day will be from 8 am to 11:30 am. From 11:30 am to 3:00 pm, a cookout will be held for the community which will include activities for children such as, face painting, inflatables, etc. This is not just a Candler Elementary event, this would be for any family within the Enka district. The event is free!

This Community Day is being sponsored by several Candler area community churches. Pole Creek has been asked to assist in two ways.

First - Volunteers are needed to come help in the cleanup of the outside of the school grounds. Those helping in this area will need to bring their own tools. & teachers with preparing their classrooms for the upcoming year.

Second - We have been asked to provide hot dogs for the event

This will be a great day to work together as a community of believers in Christ. Let’s do this for the children!!!

On Sunday, August 12, stop by the welcome centers located in the connector hall and in the lobby to sign up to be a part of the workday and/or to donate a package of hot dogs. Ice coolers that will be located at both centers for the hot dog donations.

INDUCTIVE BIBLE STUDY ON THE BOOK OF PHILIPPIANS

The apostle Paul wrote the words, "Rejoice in the Lord always: again I will say, rejoice!", in his letter to the Philippians. He was imprisoned, stoned and eventually gave his life for his faith, so we might wonder how could he always rejoice? In his letter to the believers at Philippi, Paul gives practical instructions on how to "rejoice in the Lord". We want to learn from Paul's instructions so our study will begin on Sunday, September 16 at 5:30 pm in the Open Door Bible Study Room. The class size is limited so don't wait, contact Debbie Rogers, 828-667-4053, to register. Cost of the book is $21. The facilitator is Betty Young.

On August 21, if there are still available spaces we will send invitations to other churches in Buncombe County through the Buncombe Baptist Association.

If anyone is interested in a daytime class, Betty is willing to teach a second class on Monday at 10 am in the Open Door Bible Study Room. Call Debbie Rogers to register.

HOMECOMING: A LIGHT IN THE MOUNTAINS

Ephesians 5:8 "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord: Walk as a child of light." On September 9, 2018, we will celebrate our 102nd anniversary as a church family: To God be the Glory! Our service will begin at 10:30 am with no Sunday School. We have postcards with envelopes at each Welcome Center for you to invite your friends, relatives, neighbors, member and former members to the service. We will also have postcards with refrigerator magnets (not for mailing). Stop by our Welcome Center and help us focus the "light" on Homecoming.

LOCAL MISSION OPPORTUNITY

Pole Creek has been filling food bags for the past 6 or 7 years that were delivered to Candler Elementary School and sent home with some needy children providing food for the weekend. One of our former members headed this up, but, as you know, she and her husband have gone to be a support for their son as he pastors at Westwood Baptist. Mary Beth Caldwell has now taken on this church ministry.

Here are a few facts about the ministry that you may or may not know:

  • As stated above, we have been doing this for seven years.
  • Last year, we willed 60 bags for Candler Elementary.
  • It costs $160 per week to fill the bags.
  • Sunday school classes and individuals have supported this for the past years.
  • Different groups of people and individuals fill the bags by Wednesday evening.
  • Revonda Banks takes the bags to the school on Thursday.
  • This year we have been given the okay to put a card in the bags that state that our church has supplied the food for these bags as well as the church’s phone number and website address. We hope that this will encourage the families to come be a part of our church.

We cannot do this without your financial support! We certainly could not do it without the assistance of the Sunday School classes and individuals. Beginning Sunday, August 12, we are asking everyone to think about how much you and your family could give towards this ministry. The bag of food the students take home for the weekend is sometimes all they get for the two days. It may be a one-time gift, a monthly gift or a weekly gift.  Whatever your family decides will be greatly appreciated.

Just mark in the “Other” box on your offering envelope “Food Bag” along with the amount that you are giving.  All of the monies given will go into a special account that will be used to purchase the food items needed to fill the bags with food that can be easily prepared.

NEW MINISTRY TEAM FORMING

We are forming a NEW Ministry Team that will be responsible for landscaping around church property. The Landscaping Team would be responsible for maintaining shrubs, bushes, and flower beds. Trimming, weeding and planting flowers would be included. If you are interested in being part of this team contact the church office 828-667-4053

The ministry says “Our food is unconditionally given to families and children in need, and the good news of eternal life through Jesus Christ is shared with the recipients as situations allow. This may mean someone placing their faith in Christ for the first time or someone growing more mature in following Christ.
