Ministers of the Month 2008

Ministers of the Month for December 08
(pictured above are Hank Bowman, Sharon Brown, Reva Fish, James Moore and Shirley Sluder)

A class for all. A place for anyone to learn about the love of Christ regardless of their mental or physical capacities. The Friends of Jesus Sunday School class is such a place.   It is a place where the love of Jesus is taught on a level that can be understood and absorbed by them.  Margaret Brown felt drawn by the Holy Spirit to start the class in the spring of 2004.  She felt the need to have a class where those who might not feel comfortable in a bigger class or in the sanctuary during preaching would be able to learn about Jesus.  She said that it is a joy for her to be able to see them come in and learn.

When, a few years back, Margaret became sick, James Moore took over teaching the class.  He also drives the van, going to the group home where they live, and picking them up.  He says it is a joy to see them find what they are missing in their lives in our Church.  What inspires him the most about the people in the class is the way they progress in their spiritual life.   He knows God is in their heart by the way they pray.

Shirley Sluder is an assistant teacher and helps by serving refreshments for the class.  Shirley has been with the class since the beginning. She enjoys seeing the changes that God makes in their lives.  She likes that the class is set-up so that they are reached on their level of learning.

Reva Fish, also, is  an assistant teacher and helps with the music.  She loves to see the people come in when they are shy and quiet, just watching all that is going on, and then  begin to participate and grow in their Bible knowledge.  They volunteer to help, to say prayers, or to give their testimony.  Reva goes to the group home on Tuesday nights with Conley West where they lead  in a devotion time and have a time of singing.  This way they don't just have the class on Sunday but they have something to keep them going during the week.

Hank Bowman coordinates the speakers for the class each Sunday.  He is the liaison between the class and the rest of the church.  He is very supportive and helps in any way he is needed.

Sharon Brown takes care of leading them in praising God through song.  She helped with the Christmas Party and is willing to do whatever is needed in the class.

"Accept people where they are, as they are, and gently guide them to where God wants them" is the philosophy for this class.  Jesus felt this way about the people he met and to whom he ministered.  Pole Creek is very fortunate to have a group of devoted servants that feel very strongly about everyone having a place at our church---a place where they feel free to ask questions, to speak out, to learn about what Jesus can do for them.  Everyone needs Jesus in their hearts and in their lives.

November Minister of the Month------Gail Franklin

I have a dream. I have a dream that my children, their children, and their children will be able to live in peace and prosperity.
I have a dream that all my descendants will be able to live in peace. Not only peace in the world, but that they will have peace in this country, this state, and this community. I dream that they will love each other, watch out for and take care of each other, and that they will have peace of mind. This peace of mind and concern for others will come from acknowledging Jesus Christ as their Savior.
I have a dream that my descendants will be prosperous and have prosperous souls. I dream that they will be able to take care of each others needs and will live comfortably. I don't wish for them monetary wealth, but that they don't go without food, shelter, and clothing. I have a dream that my descendants will live in serenity and will flourish.
The above statements are the basis of Gail Franklin, our November's Minister of the Month's, belief systems. Gail grew up in a Christian home. Her mother made sure they were in church as children as she struggled to raise Gail, her sister and two brothers practically by herself. Pole Creek is the church Gail has known her entire life. She remembers going to church at the little white building across the street where the cemetery is located. She would attend Sunday school in a classroom in the basement next to the boiler room. There were not many children her age so she was in a Sunday school class with older girls. One of her fondest memories was at Christmastime when the whole church drew names and exchanged presents.
Gail was saved at the age of 12 during a revival at State Street Baptist Church. She was baptized at Pole Creek.
Love of family is very important to Gail. Her husband, Craig, has been a good provider and wonderful father to their two children, Andi and Alex. He helped instill in their children the beliefs that they all share. Everyone in her family professes a faith in Jesus as their Savior.
Andi and Alex are both married to wonderful Christian spouses, and Gail adores her two grandchildren, Jamison and Jenna, and can't wait for the newest addition to the Franklin family a third grandchild due in May of next year. She enjoys spending time with her family; hiking and picnicking, and she loves to watch her children and grandchildren play sports. She loves to read and take classes in the Spiritual Life University as well as take Beth Moore Bible studies.
Her love of family and church is evident in her responsibilities at church. She teaches the 4th grade Emeralds class with her sister, Pat. She keeps the nursery once a month with her daughter Andi. Also, she is the director of the Homebound Ministry. Gail and the other members of the ministry visit, call, or send cards to those who can't make it out of their home to attend church. The members deliver magazines to the shut-ins and people staying at the nursing homes and once a quarter they deliver the Open Windows devotional magazine to them. At Christmas they put out gift bags in the breezeway for church members to bring items and place in the bags. These bags are filled with small, useful items to make gifts for the homebound. Then, right before Christmas day, they are delivered by the team and anyone wishing to take part in the ministry to the homebound. There is, also at this time, a meal delivered to them.
Gail has spent a lifetime looking out for others (her family and other church members) and helping to nurture their faith in Christ. Truly taking to heart the commandment to love your neighbor as you would love yourself: that is Gail Franklin our November minister of the month.

Ministers of the Month for October
L-R  Jennifer Styles, Gail Harding, Janice Harris

In Matthew 5:13-14, Jesus speaks of Christians being the salt of the earth and the light of the world.  In being the salt of the earth we are called to step out into our world representing our God and his love for all.  We need to let our light shine into the dark world we have found ourselves in.  Spanning over three decades, three women have taken that verse to heart.  Each started out working on a Christian Life and Public Affairs Committee at other churches.  Over the years God has brought them to Pole Creek to spread the word.

Mrs. Styles is active in several areas of our church.  From greeting members and guests as they come in the doors to being a member of The Women's Circle.  She lives in Candler with her husband Allan.  They have three children, twin girls and a boy.  She grew up in church and was saved in 1974.  She was working at Square D at the time in the engineering department.  A co-worker kept putting gospel tracks in her basket.  She would read them and finally realized her need for Christ in her life.  Oddly enough, the son of that co-worker is marrying one of her daughter's.  She feels God has brought them full circle.  She taught at Temple Baptist School, which later prepared her to be able to home-school her children.  Over the years her hobbies have included painting in watercolors and acrylics.  She has painted backdrops for children programs.  She also loves to sketch, gardening, sewing, and reading.  But her greatest passion is to inform Christians of what is going on in the world around us.

Being involved in church has always been a part of Janice Harris' life.  From being saved at a youth rally at school when she was 12 years old to being a GA leader at Pole Creek for many years.  When the orchestra was started up at Pole Creek she began playing serving her God through music.  She has been on several different mission trips over the years, always wanting to serve God in whatever way he called.  She was very involved in the start of Baptist Young Women group at Pole Creek.  She remembers listening to Pastor Johnny Tiller preach and what an amazing speaker he was.  Her husband and daughter are also members at our church.  She enjoys spending time with her family, going to the lake, reading.  Her music is an outlet for her to share the many gifts God has given to her.  In her spare time she serves as an election official.  She too feels we Christians need to step out of our shells and stand up for what we believe in and to make decisions after being informed.

In 1952 Gail Harding's Christian walk began.  She was at a Billy Graham Crusade in Washington where she worked at the Pentagon.  She remembers going to church as a child but never giving her heart to Christ.  Her parents were not believers and the family moved around a lot, but as long as there was a church within walking distance neighbors would be sure she went to church.  She met her husband while attending the Sunday school class he was teaching.  Once they started a family she stayed home and raised two daughters and a son who all live up north.  Mrs. Harding and her husband decided to retire right here in western North Carolina.  They found a church home at West Asheville Baptist.  She is now the caretaker for her husband, who has Alzheimer's.  They spend a lot of time sitting and watching the changing seasons out the window next to their dining room table--just spending time enjoying their moments together and being amazed at the majesty that God has created.  Her love for her God and informing Christians of the social issues affecting us led her to become a member of the Christian Life & Public Affairs Committee.  Her greatest passion, as the other two members, is that Christians be informed and speak out against what the Bible says is wrong.  The three ladies on the Christian Life & Public Affairs Committee write articles about pressing issues and put them into the Proclaimer.  The trio has put together voter guides, a literature rack, and an information board with vital information for all Christians.  Mrs. Styles was very grateful that Jay Hundley took the time to help them build the information bulletin board.  This allows them to be able to post articles and information for all to see, to read, to be informed.  If we, as Christians, don't take a stand and let our voice be heard then we have lost our saltiness and our lights will burn out.  Are you informed?  Are you standing up for your God or letting someone else do it for you?

Ministers Emeritus  September 2008  Lillie Cole and Mary Jo Harris

What better friend can you have than a friend through Christ?  Mary Jo Harris and Lillie Cole, our September Ministers of the Month know something about being friends and about sharing their faith with each other and those around them.  For over 70 years Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Cole have known each other.   Growing up in a time when faith and helping your neighbor meant something.  Mrs. Harris was saved when she was 15 years old while living in Canton and attending church there.  Preacher Pete Hicks was holding revival when Mrs. Harris felt the leading of the Lord.  She remembers a lady from the choir talking to her about being saved. She was baptized in the Pigeon River.  Mrs. Cole was saved at The First Baptist Church in Canton at a young age.  She remembers the church's rooms being divided by curtains and feeling the "fear" of the Lord.

Mrs. Cole moved with her family to the Pole Creek area first, separating the two girls.  Mrs. Harris remembers a party that Mrs. Cole was having at her home in Candler.  It was at this party that Mrs. Harris met her future husband, Howard Harris.  His parents were some of the charter members of Pole Creek Baptist Church.  Howard and Mary Jo Harris worked at Pole Creek for many years doing whatever job was needed to serve their Lord.  The Harrises cleaned the church for over 35 years.  Mrs. Harris has served on various committees over the years, from the flower committee to a placement committee for teachers.  She sang in the choir as well.  Mrs. Cole and Mrs. Harris visited the shut-ins until they felt they were the ones in need of a visit.  Mrs. Cole was a member of the Sunbeams and GA's in Canton and also at Pole Creek, once those organizations were begun.

Mrs. Harris's husband passed away 13 years ago.  She has two sons, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren to keep her company.  As with any family there are trials and tribulations, but ?keeping the Lord in your life will get you through anything'.  Mrs. Cole and her husband moved to Newport News, VA where they lived while Mr. Cole was in the Army.  He has since passed on but Mrs. Cole has three children, a daughter, and a set of twins living.  Her oldest daughter is a principal, her son lives in South Carolina, and her other daughter works for the Sheriff's department.
Mrs. Harris remembers walking to church each Sunday in Canton and passing one of the most beautiful flower gardens she had seen.  She wished for one of the tulips to put on her dress for Sunday, but never asked for one.  Mrs. Cole remembers feeling led to do whatever the Lord wanted her to do in the church and outside.  She would often help out with meals on wheels in any way she could.

Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Cole used to sew; Mrs. Harris sewing many quilts and Mrs. Cole making pillows for people with cancer.  They both enjoy reading when they are able.  And of course, they enjoy spending time with their families and friends.

Faith, friendship, and love are three very important qualities to have.  When you have a friendship with all three that has lasted decades, how very fortunate you are.  But think of the friendship that we have with Jesus that will last for eternity.  How very fortunate we are!

Holly Creasman
August Minister of the Month

"Verily, I say unto you except ye be converted and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.  Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 18:3-4.  Childlike faith, do you remember what it was like?  Accepting by faith what you were told, spreading the good news of Jesus.  Our August Minister of the Month, Holly Creasman exhibits a strong childlike faith.  One of the youngest ministers chosen, Holly  takes every chance she can to talk to people about Jesus.  Once while out fishing she began talking with a family about Jesus and going to church.  They were receptive to her and said that they didn't go to church like they should, but that they would think about going again.  Another family turned away from her when she began talking to them about Jesus and church.  Holly took it all in stride. She felt she had done what Jesus had been leading her to do--to tell people about Him.  By participating in the Hand Gospel with Ms. Kim, Holly gets to share the good news about Jesus with more people.

Holly is a typical pre-teen, nervous about starting middle school but excited at the same time.  She is glad she has a group of friends from the church that will be going through the same experiences with her.  She knows that having her friends, family, and God with her will make it a lot easier.  Kevin and Kandy (dad and mom) are supportive of her ability to share her faith so readily and encourage her to keep trying even when she gets a negative response.  They all three, along with Tyler, Holly's older brother, are very active in the church and in professing their faith.

She  remembers   being   in    Sunday School one morning with Ms. Kim when God spoke clearly to her.  She realized that she had sinned and needed forgiveness.  Ms Kim told Holly how to ask Jesus to be her Savior.  That  was one of the best things that had ever  happened  to her.   Since then she  has been sharing Jesus with others.  Holly has participated in Student Life University classes.  One of her favorites is "His Girl".  In this class she learned a lot about her relationship with God and about being modest in her dress and in her actions.  Holly believes every young girl should take this class.

Outside of church she enjoys singing, but not in front of groups.  She likes to play softball, fish, hike, and camp.  She loves to swim and wishes her school had a swim team.  She also enjoys art and draws all the time.  But the thing she enjoys the most is sharing about Jesus.  She doesn't consider that a hobby.  She considers that a lifestyle.  Can you imagine what the world would be like if we didn't consider sharing Jesus a hobby but if it became our lifestyle?  May Holly, our August Minister of the Month, always continue to share Jesus whenever the chance arises and may many more follow in her footsteps.

Ministers of the Month for July 2008 - Joel & LaRue Neilson

It didn't take long to find out what the Neilson's are passionate about:  God and family.  Joel was raised as a Methodist.  The church he belonged to luckily not only believed in confirmation but also salvation.  He was saved while attending a Billy Graham crusade in Asheville.  A wonderful young lady whom happened to be a preacher's daughter later brought him over to the Baptist side.  LaRue grew up in church being exposed to the plan of salvation all of her life.  She was saved at a young age, growing in her walk with God throughout her life.  The church social scene has always been a part of their lives.  Joel remembers fondly covered dish meals, music sung in church, and going on youth retreats.  LaRue remembers going to homecoming's, attending Sunday school, and bible school.  Growing up in church as they did it is no surprise their two children, Jacob, 13 and Keaton, 10 are also very active in church.  Jacob loves sports and Keaton likes animals, ballet, and playing soccer.  Joel currently works for Novo Nordisk, Inc.  It is a Danish company that is a diabetes organization whose primary focus is insulin therapy.  Joel loves his job because of all the people he gets to meet and help.  LaRue worked for 16 years at Wachovia.  About four years ago she was able to quit her corporate job and take on a much more important job to her, a stay-at-home mom.  LaRue loves being able to stay home with her kids and spend more time with them and Joel.  They all love to travel and see the wonderful things God has created.  Joel likes to golf, weightlifting, hike, play football, basketball, and do projects around the house with LaRue (I hope every guy that reads this article hears that.)  LaRue likes to scrapbook, do some interior decorating, walking, and cycling.  Joel and LaRue both have the spirit of God in them.  They are the teachers for a young married couple class and believe that is an awesome responsibility.  LaRue enjoys preparing the lessons and often thinks she benefits more from the preparation of the lesson.  Joel also sings in the choir and is very involved in the youth program.  He also has just started his first term as deacon for Pole Creek.  One of LaRue's passions is Christian education.  It is a most needed item in our churches if we are to fight the evil that lurks just beyond the light.  We are very lucky at Pole Creek to have Joel and LaRue Neilson as our July Minister's of the Month, as well as part of our church family.

Artis Bush: June 2008 Minister of the Month

When you say the name Bush at Pole Creek you think of The Bush Family that fills our auditorium with their inspiring musical tones. One member of that trio is our June Minister of the Month, Artis Bush. Artis has been singing in church since his earliest recollections at age 4 1/2. It was at a Vacation Bible School commencement ceremony at a previous church. None of the other children wanted to sing in front of the church, so Artis learned the song and sang it, and so began a long history of singing for the Lord. He remembers being saved at age 16 and has been serving the Lord ever since. In June he began teaching the Senior Men's Sunday School Class. Prior to that he was the assistant teacher in the auditorium class. Artis enjoys teaching and doing what he feels the Lord has called him to. He feels he should use the abilities the Lord has given him to God's Glory. Artis works for Ingles as the Assistant to the Director for Store Design and Construction. In this position he mainly helps create the store displays that we see when we walk into the grocery store. He lives with his mother and 2 cats. His brother, mother, and he make up the Bush Family Trio. Artis likes to read and watch baseball. The New York Yankees are his favorite major league baseball team. Artis Bush the June Minister of the Month, is an example to all of us that we should be using our gifts from the Lord to glority Him.

Juanita Chiles: May 2008 Minister of the Month
Testifying to God's Faithfulness

Mrs. Juanita Chiles was named the May 2008 Minister of the Month by our pastor and deacons on the first Sunday of this month. Known by some as Lynn Bailey's mother and Parker and Garren's grandmother, and perhaps by others as the nice, quiet redhead that serves drinks in the Fellowship Hall, Juanita moved to Candler in 2001 and joined Pole Creek shortly thereafter. A Kentucky native, Juanita came to North Carolina by way of Tampa, Florida, and eastern Tennessee.

Juanita remembers her parents taking her to church as a youngster?dropping her off, but not staying themselves. "I was on the cradle roll," she says. She was baptized and joined the church as a child, but it was in 1956, at the age of 14, when attending a Billy Graham crusade in Louisville, that she believes she made a sincere commitment to follow Christ. He has guided her through difficult life decisions and even physically moved her to be where He would have her.

When Juanita's father had a work-related accident in the mid-1960s, she left college at Western Kentucky and went home to help her family. The following February, she and a friend decided to accept a longstanding invitation to visit her aunt in Tampa, FL. "We didn't have a lot going on," Juanita says, so they saved their money and bought bus tickets to Tampa. Surprisingly, her aunt served one meal the day they arrived and sent the two young ladies out with her husband to find an apartment in Tampa! This was accomplished in one afternoon, and that's how Juanita Chiles became a Floridian. The city bus line transported Juanita to a successful job interview at a nearby automobile dealership, where some weeks later she met her husband-to-be, John Chiles.

In addition to raising a son (John, Jr.) and daughter (Lynn), who have given her six grandchildren, Juanita worked for Sprint Publishing for 23 years. She and John moved to the mountains in 1993; she, to continue her job with Sprint; and he, to serve as a parts manager for an automobile dealership.
Juanita witnessed God's hand at work in response to their prayers about such a big move. Her son also had an opportunity to move to NC. Having family nearby would prove providential in the coming year, when her husband began having heart problems. The following December, while recovering in the hospital, John suffered a stroke and passed away. Juanita fondly recalls her late husband's love for the mountains, and his reaction to snow the first time he experienced it as an adult. "He was a nut anyhow," she says, "hilarious."

Of these difficult times and God's supply, Juanita testifies, "It was the Lord's plan .all the Lord's making." Juanita now lives in Canton, next door to Greg and Lynn and the boys. At the present, she is recovering from a broken leg, sustained last week. Once she's up and about again, you will see her faithfully serving as a greeter at church, participating in the Current Mission Group, and serving with the kitchen committee. (If you'd like to send her a card, you may contact the church office for her current address!)

Doubts about her salvation plagued truck driver Pat Lilly until one day, somewhere between Charleston and Richmond, she gave her heart to Christ.

Pat Lilly: April 2008 Minister of the Month

Pat Lilly joined Pole Creek Baptist Church as a child, going forward during an invitation. At the age of 24, she began driving a tractor trailer truck with her husband J.C. for Estes Express Lines out of Nashville, an unusual job for a woman at the time. For many years, they would leave home on Wednesdays, drive through the weekend, and return home on Mondays. During this time, she missed church.

In her late twenties, Pat began to have doubts about her relationship with Jesus Christ, questioning whether or not she was really saved.
"I asked my husband, You're saved, aren't you?' and he said, yes'. I asked him, Have you ever read the Bible all the way through?'" Wondering how God felt about their failure to read and study His Word, Pat and J.C. made a commitment to read seven chapters a day until they had completed the entire Bible.
"We got a Living Bible, and I would sit and read aloud to him in the truck every evening after dinner," Pat shared. "But then I thought, This is too slow! I need more!'" She longed for the assurance of salvation.
"I remember that I wanted to read Bible tracts, but I didn't want anyone to see me. I was too embarrassed." Then one day, on the drive to Charleston, Pat thought about all of the tracts that were usually scattered on the tables at the truck terminal, their next stop. She was determined to sit down and read the tracts, regardless of who was watching. After arriving at the terminal and turning in her paperwork, she walked over to the tables where the tracts usually were. There were none there.
Disappointed and dismayed, she started to leave, but needed to go to the bathroom first. As she walked into the large restroom, her eyes scanned the shower stalls and counters. "I looked down, and there was a Bible tract," Pat said. The title on the small booklet sent cold chills over her body.
"Are You Sure?" it asked.
For the next few hours, on the interstate from Charleston to Richmond, Pat would read a few words, drive, and think. "By the time I got to the rest area on the interstate, I thought, I know what it is now.'" She gave her heart to Christ.
Pat recalls, "The devil had me convinced that God saved certain kinds of bad people but I was convinced I was a different kind of people. I was meaner. More bad."

When Pat pulled into the rest area, she knew she needed to tell someone of her commitment, based on Romans 10:9-10 which says, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."
"But my husband was asleep!" Pat says. So she found a pay phone and called Pastor Johnny Tiller's house. He was not at home, so Pat told her story to Tiller's daughter. She was not taking any chances this time. She explains, "The devil knows he has lost the battle when someone gets saved, he tries to create doubts in your mind."
Pat is convinced that people should be discipled after making a commitment to live for Christ. She readily tells her testimony as an encouragement to others. "I want to be a blessing to other people," she says, "People can relate to real life."

After nearly 20 years of driving for Estes, Pat chose to become a part-time driver, which she did for four years. Last Fall, a Beth Moore Bible Study led her to pray about retiring and volunteering at church. "Lord," she prayed, "If this is what You want, make it to where I have to." Within two weeks, Estes laid off their part-time employees, and Pat found herself in the middle of God's will.

Recently, when Pastor Terry announced that he had posted a spiritual gifts assessment form on the church's website, Pat decided to take the test. Her number one gift was service. Accompanying material explained how this gift could be used. After noticing the wallpaper peeling in the baptistry, Pat took it upon herself to strip out the old wallpaper and repaint the walls. She was named the April 2008 Minister of the Month at Pole Creek for her tireless service. God continues to work in Pat's life as she attends school, studying dental radiography. "I have no idea what this will lead to," she confesses, but she remains faithful that God will guide her steps. Her advice to others: "Stay in God's Word. The devil will do anything he can to keep you out of God's Word." She also encourages others to take the spiritual gifts test to find out how God can use them.

"It's not a burden."
Bill and Sabra Stewart
March 2008 Ministers of the Month

"We came to Pole Creek through the Awana program," said Sabra Stewart. "Our daughter was invited...it was wonderful to see people working so hard to teach children the truths of the Bible."

In accepting the March 2008 Ministers of the Month recognition for their work in the Children's Department on Sunday mornings, the Stewarts acknowledged the reward of servanthood. Soon after joining the church and being baptized a year and a half ago, Bill and Sabra were asked to teach children. "With lots of prayer and help from Mrs. Kim and Betty Young," Sabra said, "we soon realized that it wasn't a burden. It was a blessing."

The Stewarts are members of The Well Sunday School class. They moved to Candler from Miami, Florida, where Bill was the director of the golf department at a country club. Sabra is from Madison County (Marshall), where her two brothers and their families still live. Bill and Sabra own and manage a construction business. They have three daughters: Savannah, a 12-year-old Enka Middle School student who loves art; 10-year-old Rebeccah, also at Enka, who loves to read; and Kaitlinn, 9 years old, who attends Candler Elementary and enjoys outdoor recreation and sports. Naturally, Bill's main hobby is golfing. Sabra enjoys anything outdoors, especially working in her garden, which is located inside the unoccupied horse ring at their home on Justice Ridge!

Referring to the towel and basin, similar to those used by Jesus as He washed His disciples' feet, Pastor Dennis thanked the Stewarts for their willingness to serve behind the scenes. "You're making a difference for the cause of Christ," he said, urging others to accept a servant role in our Preschool and Children's Departments.

Courtney Harris
Minister of the Month for February 2008

Courtney Harris, February's Minister of the Month, is a new face at Pole Creek, and already she's making a difference on a weekly basis. A graduate of AB Tech, UNCA, and Western, Courtney left her job as a paralegal to become a stay-at-home mom when her daughter was born seven years ago. She and her husband Billy, an Enka graduate, joined Pole Creek in September, and on Thursdays Courtney volunteers in the church office. "She can do anything!" Sharon says of Courtney. Pastor Dennis voiced his deep appreciation for the behind-the-scenes service Courtney offers, noting that most people who receive the Minister of the Month award would never expect to receive it.

In her interview, Courtney admitted to one unusual addiction. "I'm hooked on Bible study books," she laughs. "I can't get enough of them, especially Beth Moore books."

She's also a Mitford (Jan Karon) fan, and in the spring and summer enjoys gardening and canning. "One day we might need to know how to do this," she says of the lost art of food growing and preserving. Growing up, Courtney spent a lot of time on her Grandfather's farm in Barnardsville, her North Carolina home place. This may explain her fondness for Mitford and gardening. Her love for the Lord explains her volunteer service and craving for Bible study!

Jack & Marjorie Hensley
Decades of Faithfulness
January 2008 Ministers of the Month

Jack and Marjorie Hensley were married on December 30, 1957, in a Madison County church. At the time, Jack was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. In 1976, the couple began visiting Pole Creek Baptist Church. "I especially remember everyone being so friendly," Marjorie says, "I felt right at home. I knew it was my church home." Before even joining the church, the couple began serving in the nursery. "When I see now parents whose children are ready to go to high school," Jack exclaims, "We kept those parents when they were in the nursery!"
On October 1, 1978, the Hensleys officially joined Pole Creek, continuing as members of the Pastor's (Auditorium) Sunday School class until the present. Made up of all ages, the class has 200 members on role, with an average attendance of seventy-five. The Hensleys have always been very active members of this class, first serving under Pastor Holloway.
Jack and Marjorie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary several weeks ago, and the pastor recognized their faithfulness to one another as well as to Pole Creek, naming them the January 2008 Ministers of the Month. "When I think of ability," Pastor Thurman said, "We all have ability. Jack and Marjorie have dependability. And that's the greatest kind."
"I could always count on them," the pastor said, noting the couple's long-time work in church visitation, even before the FAITH program began. Both have served on a FAITH team in the past, and they agree that Sunday School involvement has been the most rewarding ministry in their time at Pole Creek. Jack says, "On Sunday mornings it's good to see people you've visited."
The Hensleys have three adult daughters: Debbie Graham, Teresa Owen, and Brenda Fisher. Jack is retired from 43 ½ years with the National Linen Service, where he served in the fleet department. He now enjoys wood-working, turning imported woods from Africa and the Holy Land into beautiful items such as pens. Currently, Jack is working on a line of Christmas ornaments. Marjorie continues to work at Nationwide Insurance. In her spare time, she enjoys sending birthday cards to Sunday School members and participating in the Current Missions Circle (WMU), which meets on the first Monday night of each month.
